Starting to look like HOME! (Beware of Mayflower)
Published on: 01-26-2006

All the boxes are gone, a few things damaged, but generally a good move (except we cannot "hear" from Mayflower ... see below).

Starting to hang the pictures, got a new china cabinet, and have submited proposition for and got approval to add a banister around the front porch, add shutters to the only window there without them, and add a storm door on the front. Sounds simple? Not here! You have to get such things "approved" by the "Standards Committee." :-)

* Mayflower ... if you are considering a move, be careful about using Mayflower. After 2 frantic days of packing, when everything was on the truck, you are asked to "sign" about 20 sheets of paper listing the boxes and items packed. There is also ANOTHER form you are asked to sign. In our case it was for $.69 per pound. The move was supposed to cost us about $.60 per pound, so I thought this is what I was agreeing to. Not so. The form I was asked to sign ... AFTER everything was on the truck ... was that I would only charge them $.69 per pound of anything damaged. (What would have happened if I would have realized this and refused to sign ... would they have taken everything off the truck?). Anyway, think about it. If you have a piece of crystal worth say $400, but it only weighs one pound ... guess what the "replacement value" is? Yep, $.69 !!! (as in 69 CENTS). Had this been explained BEFORE the move started, it is a document I would never have signed. So "Buyer Beware" folks ... if you are going to use a moving company ... I'd NOT use Mayflower. We turned in our "claims" in December, this is January 26th and they are still "trying to find somebody to come look at our damage." That is why the Better Buisiness Bureau of Memphis will be getting a detailed letter from us on Mayflower, specifically Alexander Transfer and Storage of Memphis.

The LAST box! (Finally!)
Published on: 01-21-2006

At last, the garden room is once again a garden room instead of a Mayflower Mover's warehouse. The garage also has two cars in it instead of 50 boxes! Today, the "last box" was opened, emptied, flattened and taken to the "Crown Jewel" of Sun City, the Bluffton Dump! I don't know what we would have done without it! Every day, we made a "get-rid-of-the-boxes" run. They meet you with a smile, often help you unload your cargo, even decorate the place for holidays. Bottom line, the boxes are gone. If I ever have a thought of moving again ... shoot me!

Boxes, Boxes! Anybody need boxes?
Published on: 01-05-2006

If you haven't moved lately, you have probably forgotten the number of BOXES that appear in every room, just like mushrooms! We are finally cutting the mountain of boxes down to size, but it has taken a full week's effort and we still have plenty to go. But the house is starting to look like a home ... at least we can see what it might be like when we are through.
